(OTTAWA) January 23, 2016 – Today, Ottawa Community Housing Corporation (OCH) Chief Executive Officer, Stéphane Giguère was joined by City of Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and OCH Board Chair, Councillor Mathieu Fleury, to celebrate the official opening of the reconstructed Hayley Court – the most recent affordable housing development in Ottawa. The ceremony was followed by an open house where guests viewed several of the homes.

Hayley Court features the latest OCH architectural design developed to maximize space, utilize energy efficient technologies as well as incorporate materials that improve durability and reduce overall maintenance costs. A variety of key elements found in the OCH green plan, the CPTED approach, accessibility standards were considered in the final design to provide safe and healthy homes for new tenants. It is expected that the homes will be occupied next month.

Destroyed by a fire in 2013, this $4.5 M townhouse community has been redesigned and reconstructed on the old foundations adding two homes and 10 bedrooms to the same footprint. The housing community has 16 stacked townhouses. It includes 2 four-bedroom modified accessible homes, and a mix of 1 to 4 bedroom townhouses. The ground floor of the two-storey modified accessible homes is fully accessible with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room. The homes are highly energy efficient, using LED lighting and polished concrete radiant floor heating. The design allows two of the 3-bedroom homes to be easily modified to increase the bedroom count by one to accommodate the needs of a larger family.

The new Haley Court demonstrates Ottawa Community Housing’s expertise and its commitment to developing safe and healthy communities,” said Mayor Jim Watson.

“Today marks an important milestone as we celebrate the reconstruction of the Hayley Court community, following the fire in 2013” commented Councillor Mathieu Fleury, Chair of the OCH Board of Directors. “OCH was able to build two more townhouses on the same footprint.   In addition, OCH is now able to offer larger families two modified accessible homes to meet their needs. The community, both inside and out, has been thoughtfully designed to increase the comfort, safety and security of tenants. We are happy to welcome new residents to this amazing living space.”

“I am very proud of the new Hayley Court affordable housing development,” commented Stéphane Giguère, CEO of Ottawa Community Housing. “The reconstruction has given OCH the opportunity to enhance capacity to provide new affordable homes and build a better and improved community for Ottawa.”
