We wanted to know how to engage with tenants from all walks of life and backgrounds, so we have been working with Urban Design Consulting to gather information on connecting with everyone in the community.

Here are some key themes we heard:

  • There are some trust issues; tenants want to feel that their questions or concerns are valued. When there are delays in responding, this translates into a hesitance to reach out again.
  • Tenants experience challenges navigating OCH. They cope with this by supporting each other.
  • Care isn’t about service but a relationship – tenants want more opportunities to connect with staff in person at offices and in their community.
  • Tenants want to see themselves represented in the OCH staff. They feel the corporation should hire from the communities.
  • Language help: Many tenants speak a language other than English. Residents would like to see place-based language support, for example, a francophone staff member who could answer questions in the community at a specified time. Tenants would know when to come and get help with some common issues.

What is next?

We will look at what you’ve told us and work on a roadmap to a more inclusive OCH. In the meantime, the conversation isn’t over. We will ask those who didn’t get a chance to attend the consultations to participate in an online survey. We have translated the survey into French and Mandarin to get more input.
