Tackling Waste and Litter Together
Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts on issues in their community and some potential fixes. Litter costs everyone. When OCH staff or contractors have to remove litter or improperly sorted waste – it takes money away from community improvements and other things that matter to you. Tenants at the meeting had some great suggestions. Here’s a snapshot of what they had to say:
- Residents are ready to help. Some said they would volunteer to pick up litter if OCH provided them with supplies like bags and garbage pickers.
- Clearer signage matters. We were told that increased signage in multiple languages would be helpful in communities where garbage chutes were closed to introduce recycling and compost to apartment buildings.
- On-site staff need to know too. One senior resident said that OCH should communicate changes with the garbage room to Personal Support Workers and other onsite support staff.
- Illegal dumping is rising. Residents shared concerns that people from other communities coming and dumping their garbage – some participants thought it might be increasing due to the City of Ottawa’s new three-bag garbage limit.
