We wanted to know how to engage with tenants from all walks of life and backgrounds, so we hosted in-person consultations at 395 Somerset and Britannia Woods to gather information on how to connect with everyone in the community.

Here are some key themes we heard from you:

  • There are trust issues; you want to feel that your questions or concerns are valued. When there are delays in responding, this translates into a hesitance to reach out again.
  • You experience challenges navigating OCH. And you told us you cope with this by supporting each other.
  • Care isn’t about service but a relationship – you want more opportunities to connect with staff in person, both at offices and in your community.
  • You would like to see yourself represented in the OCH staff. You feel the corporation should hire from the communities.
  • Language help: We heard that many tenants speak a language other than English. You said you would like to see place-based language support. For example, a francophone staff member could answer questions in the community at a specified time. Tenants would know when to come and get help with some common issues.

What is next?

We will look at what you’ve told us and work on a roadmap to a more inclusive OCH. In the meantime, the conversation isn’t over. We will ask those who didn’t get a chance to attend the consultations to participate in an online survey. We have translated the survey into French and Mandarin to get more input. Once consultations are completed, we will share a more comprehensive report with our findings and next steps. Stay tuned!
