Tuesday, April 12, 2022 (OTTAWA, ON) – Ottawa Community Housing Corporation (OCHC) is proud to announce that 2022 marks 20 years of providing safe, inclusive, and affordable housing. Since the corporation’s merger with City Living and Ottawa Housing on September 3, 2002, OCHC has grown tremendously – which has resulted in more than 32,000 individuals and families calling OCHC home.

Back in 2002, City Living and Ottawa Housing merged to create Ottawa Community Housing Corporation, which forever transformed the landscape of affordable housing in the Nation’s Capital. Since then, OCHC has become a leader in the sector, showing innovation and fostering vibrant communities that support tenants.

OCHC collaborates with partners to support tenants because our responsibility is beyond bricks and mortar. By working together, OCHC has understood for over 20 years what it takes to address the needs of tenants in our communities.

Throughout the years, OCHC has acquired, renewed, designed, and constructed thousands of homes with the help of private, community, and government partners. What started as a portfolio of just 7,000 homes in 2002, has quickly grown to more than 15,000, with hundreds more on the way as part of our 10-Year Development Plan. As we celebrate the past, we also look to an exciting future with more innovative and affordable housing communities on the way on Mikinak Road in Wateridge, Rochester Heights Phase II, Gladstone Village, and Jockvale Road.

To better understand OCHC’s journey, please see our 20th Anniversary Timeline here, which provides a roadmap of what started as humble beginnings to becoming Ottawa’s largest, Ontario’s second-largest, and Canada’s fourth-largest affordable housing provider.

To commemorate OCHC’s 20th anniversary, we’re calling on the public to share memories and stories related to OCHC from the past 20 years. Throughout 2022, these stories will be shared on our social media channels. To submit a story, please visit och-lco.ca/20years for more information.

Quotes:

OCH’s 20-year commitment to providing high quality, affordable homes and fostering vibrant communities remains a top priority. The Board of Directors and I are deeply proud of the employee culture and good governance OCH has created to improve its tenants’ services continually. We have become a leader in the construction of affordable homes in Ottawa, including having one of the largest portfolios of passive homes in Canada by the end of 2022. Councillor Mathieu Fleury, Chair of the OCHC Board of Directors

We have so much to celebrate during OCHC’s 20th anniversary. These accomplishments could not have been made possible without the collaboration and commitment of our employees, Board of Directors, volunteers, partners, tenants, sector leaders, and all levels of government. This is not just a celebration of OCHC, but one of the on-going passions to providing safe, high-quality, affordable homes for the residents of Ottawa. I am grateful for what OCHC has done in the past and present and look forward to the future of continuing to nurture healthy, safe and inclusive communities, deliver quality services to every tenant in every home, innovate to meet growing housing and financial needs, and foster an organizational culture of leadership, accountability and continuous improvement, where everyone makes a difference each day. – Stéphane Giguère, Chief Executive Officer, Ottawa Community Housing Corporation
