We sat down with OCH summer students
Meghan and Owen who told us about their work in landscape maintenance over the
summer of 2021.

They are both Carleton University students. Meghan is going into
the third year of her Environmental Science degree. Owen finished a degree in
Global and International Studies and is working towards a post-graduate degree
in European, Russian and Eurasian studies.

Meghan said she was attracted to the job because she wanted to
do landscaping and get involved in the community. “It’s a great
introduction to the community and a chance to work with tenants on what kind of
plants they would like,”

Owen said he wanted the chance to work outside. “I think
public housing is really important and what OCH is doing is really
positive,” he said.

A typical day for both of them is cutting the grass on one or
two sites, depending on the size of the communities. Then they weed the flower
beds and work on specific requests from residents, such as cutting back trees
and shrubs or mending a broken fence. They also do community clean-ups.

Owen said one of his favourite parts of the job is breaking up
furniture left in the community garbage to make room for waste.

“It is a real workout,” he said, adding he also likes to hear from tenants when
they compliment the landscape work.
