Get Your Home Ready for Fall and Colder Weather 

Fall is here. Now is a good time to get your home ready for winter. 

These simple steps can help keep your home safe and prevent damage from snow, ice, and cold weather. 

For all OCH tenants 

Check your alarms 

• Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. 

• Replace batteries if needed. 

Get your windows ready 

• Remove window or portable air conditioners before October 15. 

• When it gets cold, keep windows and patio doors closed. 

Keep heaters clear 

• Clean dust and debris from baseboard heaters. 

• Keep furniture and curtains at least 30 cm (1 foot) away from heaters. 

If you have a balcony 

• Remove leaves, plants and other debris. 

• Remove planter boxes from balcony railings. 

• Bring cushions and other light items inside. 

• Secure items that must stay outside. 

• Remove items that could be damaged by snow or ice. 

If you have a backyard 

Clean your yard 

• Rake leaves from the grass. 

• Clear leaves from walkways, patios, and drains. 

• Keep the walkways clear. 

• Put leaves in yard waste bags or compost them. 

• Mow your grass one last time before winter. 

Put away outdoor items 

• Clean and store patio furniture, toys, BBQ items, planters and garden tools. 

• Remove garden hoses from outdoor taps. Drain and store the hoses. 

• Keep basement windows, walkways and utility meters clear. 

Turn off outdoor taps  

• Go inside your home and find the water shut-off valve that controls the outdoor line. 

• Check areas like the basement, crawl space, utility room, or under the kitchen sink. If you’re not sure where it is, call 613-731-1182.

• Broken fences or gates 

• Cracked walkways 

• Loose railings 

• Outdoor lights that do not work 

• Sheds that do not close 

• Water pooling near your home 

• Problems with drains or downspouts 

• Cracks or openings where pests can get into your home.
