When community comes together with intention, powerful things happen.

Residents at 181 Bruyère gathered for a Community Action Plan session, and the turnout was inspiring.

Tenants shared their vision for the year ahead. By working and deciding together, they set priorities, explored programming ideas, and strengthened their commitment to building a welcoming community.

What We Heard

Residents said they wanted their kitchen and lounge to support programming.
Tenant volunteers asked for:

  •  kitchen supplies and a first aid kid.
  •  A new stove.

Tip: You can work with your Community Developer to apply for Community Capital Funds to pay for community improvements and training

Training

Two tenants want Food Handling Certification so they can safely lead food programs for the building.

Community Programming

Residents already enjoy activities that bring people together:

  • Doodling group: every Monday,
  • Bible study:  every Sunday,
  • Chair Yoga: every other Tuesday (supported by Aging in Place)

Residents also discussed how they would use their annual community association budget.  They have hosted a successful spaghetti dinner and are planning:

  • more events
  • projects, including community improvements
  • a holiday dinner
  • a Pop-In Play program (supported by the Ottawa Community Housing Foundation).

Residents identified a need to learn more about the digital world and devices. Plans are in the works to get a workshop facilitator.

Working Together

At the end of the session, tenants in the community association agreed that the lounge is a shared space for the whole community.

By working together, residents at 181 Bruyere are building a stronger, more connected community.
