Partner Spotlight: Ottawa Mission Launches Second Food Truck

The Ottawa Mission launched a second food truck on April 19 in the OCH community of Regina Towers.

Regina will be one of 13 stops the new food truck will make. These visits will provide 7,000 meals to residents every week.

Chef Ric, the Director of Food Services for the Ottawa Mission, began the Mobile Mission Meals program in 2020 with five stops, serving 100 meals each week.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mission has seen demand increase. Prior to 2020, the Mission served 520,000 meals each year – in 2022 that number will be 1 million. That’s one meal per resident of Ottawa.

“Every single day our truck goes out and people line up to receive the meals they need to survive. People with walkers, in wheelchairs, and with their kids. People, who never worried about feeding themselves and their families until Covid-19, come to our truck to survive,” said Chef Ric.

The truck will roll up to Regina Towers the first and third Tuesday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. For a full schedule, visit ottawamission.com/ottawa-mission-food-truck-weekly-schedule/

In total, the two trucks will make 32 stops each month, serving neighbourhoods across the city.

Ottawa Community Housing CEO Stéphane Giguère knows the food truck is important to many residents.

“Since September 2020, the Mission Food Truck has provided an invaluable service to tenants living in OCHC communities. We know food insecurity is a real issue – and we are grateful for partners such as the Ottawa Mission who help us meet the diverse needs of 32,000 residents, “ he said.
