Residents Celebrate Banff-Ledbury Community With “Joy” Mural

On Sept. 16, Banff Community House residents and partners unveiled a mural two years in the making. A bright symbol of community pride.
“We wanted to show hope, family, community, and strength,” said Gwendy, the Community Engagement Coordinator at Banff Community House. She added that tenants wanted to improve the neighbourhood’s reputation after past negative events.
In February, residents received a grant from OCH’s Community Capital Fund to pay for the mural. Then they worked with artist Claudia Salguero, known for her murals. Together, they created art that included things that mattered to residents – a basketball, a vine to show connections and a child’s face.
“A ‘joyful’ child reflects a happy, strong and supportive family and community,” Gwendy said. “Our goal for this project is for people to see this beauty in Banff-Ledbury.”
The mural faces Bank Street and is visible from the bridge, sharing Banff Ledbury’s story with the city.
Artist Claudia added, “This mural stands for trust, renewal, and joy. It shows how Banff Ledbury’s youth are inspired, proud, and hopeful for the future,”
Community Change
The mural is part of a bigger story of residents shaping their neighbourhood.
The community also worked with a Carleton University graduate student to help them demonstrate how residents would benefit from improved access to recreation. Thanks to their efforts, residents will soon have safer pathways and a new basketball court.
