Residents were sad when the exercise class at McEwen Terrace had to stop when the program’s funding ended. The class was more than just moving and stretching. It brought people together from many cultures. It was a time to laugh, talk, and feel strong.

Sylvia missed it too.

Sylvia has lived in the seniors community at McEwen Terrace for many years. She loves spending time outdoors. She also has a background in Health Administration. While working in administration at a long-term care home, she learned a lot about the benefits of seniors staying active. She has also practiced yoga extensively over the years. Sylvia knew how important safe exercise is, especially for seniors. And she knew she could help.

So Sylvia stepped up.

In 2018, she started a tenant-led exercise class. She began volunteering twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. The exercises are based on the Better Strength Better Balance program. Sylvia uses what she has learned to guide movements that are safe, gentle, and helpful. She understands knee pain herself, so she makes sure exercises help people stay active without getting hurt.

Then came the pandemic.

But Sylvia and her group did not give up. They spaced out their chairs. They followed the rules. They kept moving. They kept smiling.

Today, the class is still going strong.

Sylvia’s class helps residents improve balance and stay active. It also helps fight loneliness. The group has become a safe space where seniors can connect, support one another, and build friendships.

Because of Sylvia, McEwen Terrace did not just get an exercise class back. It gained a stronger, closer community. One small step, twice a week, has made a big difference.
